The methods I use are with one of the most versatile art mediums ever created. I use acrylic paint. Acrylics - unlike oil, achieve almost instantaneous results. They dry in minutes, meaning your results are achieved quickly. If your not happy, simply paint over it. Shading is easily achieved through blending and drybrushing. Acrylic paintings will not yellow and will virtually last forever!
You've got to walk before you can run. This means practice. But like everything in life, you need instruction. Maybe you have had instruction and the instructor was too loose and didn't provide specific techniques. Sometimes it's not enough for them to say....
